Teach your baby to be a hip hop producer early. This is a MIDI drum kit that I made using a microcontroller and another $2 find at Savers.
The name was kind of a play on “Drum Kit”, but the fact that I have to explain that means it could have a better name. Too late.
Anyway, I ripped the guts out of this toy and replaced them with my own guts. Said guts include an Atmel AVR microcontroller containing a program that I wrote to make this do what it does. What it does: You hit one of the 9 buttons and a MIDI drum message is sent to a MIDI device of your choosing. Each of the buttons has its own drum sound, but the beauty of this thing is the “Setup” mode: 
Choose the Happy Face on the switch to the right and you can change the drum sound that each button produces by repeatedly pressing that button until you get the sound you want. Once you have the setup you want, you switch back to the Music Note for “Play” mode. Check out the video to see what I mean.
The audio in the video was recorded by connecting the Dumb Kit to a MacBook running Garage Band but it could just as easily be connected to any MIDI-enabled device, like a MIDI keyboard or a rack mounted synthesizer.
